Concept:
The design first presents horizontal and vertical projections and recesses of differing proportions on its western facade. Referencing the Black and White bungalow, perimeter frames; eaves of 100mm depth surround window openings and are positioned to guide light into the house, allowing greater daylight penetration within public spaces while tempering light in more intimate areas.
Eaves are also formed through the layering of voids, where edges created by floorplates act as eaves that draws light vertically. In response to the clients’ enjoyment of reading, reading nooks are embedded within these edges. These thresholds are thus transformed to be both a place of pause and a visual anchor, with views toward it and from it across multiple levels.
Taking into consideration the busy road at its side, The House of eaves is set 5m inwards from its boundary, creating ample space for plants to grow, which can be viewed from the eaved walkway. Perimeter roof eaves of 2m deep to further shade and protect, reinforcing the house’s relationship to light, rain, and the lived experience.
Together, these varied eaves establish a domestic environment where light is carefully modulated to support comfort, pause, and everyday inhabitation.
